The Miriam Makeba Centre of Performing Arts

The Miriam Makeba Centre of Performing Arts is named after the legendary singer and anti-apartheid activist Miriam Makeba, who is famous for irresistible hits like Pata Pata and Qongqothwane (The Click Song). In a fitting tribute to Makeba, the Centre houses the University of Fort Hare’s Department of Music and provides East London with a public performance venue and professional recording facility. It is fronted by the former Missions to Seamen building, which used to provide sailors with Christian recreation and an evening meal when they docked at the port of East London.
